Cup and ball

This wooden cup and ball is a home-made toy. It dates from between 1845 and 1847.

The ball is fastened by string to a stick with a shallow cup at one end.

The children of working-class families relied for play on home-made toys and street games. As the 19th century went on, better-off children had access to an increasing range of toys and books.
