Phial

This glass phial was a child's toy of the late 19th century. When the pink alcohol inside is warmed by hand it boils violently.

Glass phial with a bulbous end entered by a narrow inner tube containing pink alcohol which jumps up the main tube when warmed in the hand, a child's toy of the late 19th century

The children of working-class families relied for play on home-made toys and street games. As the 19th century went on, better-off children had access to an increasing range of toys and books.
