Playing piece

This whalebone playing piece was found in a cave on the island of Rum in the West Highlands. It dates from the 15th or early 16th century.

The Lords of the Isles encouraged the arts of sculpture and carving. Artists and professional people formed an aristocracy of learning and skills were passed through generations. Most of the objects created were functional as well as decorative.
