Add to album

These 19th-century stone hainching balls were found while remaking the Falkirk to Slamannan Road.

One of six stone henching balls found while remaking the Falkirk to Slamannan road

In hainching, two or more men threw stone or iron balls two or three miles along a road to a defined point. The man who reached it in the fewest throws was the winner. The sport, which died out in Scotland by 1820, was reintroduced by Irish emigrants.
