Snuff box, associated with steam vessel Charlotte Dundas

< 1 of 1 > Back

made in Mauchline, Ayrshire

This varnished oak snuff box was made by W & A Smith in Mauchline in Ayrshire, allegedly from the timbers of the steam vessel, the 'Charlotte Dundas'.

The lid is inscribed 'Oak of Symington Steamer, Charlotte Dundas, Built 1801'.

The engine of the 'Charlotte Dundas' was designed and built by William Symington. He had been commissioned by Lord Dundas to develop a steam powered tug for use on the Forth and Clyde Canal but fears about canal erosion halted the experiments.
