Add to album

This tobacco cutter, dating from the early 19th century, was probably used to cut plugs of tobacco before they were rubbed into pipe tobacco or ground into snuff.

The small 'guillotine' for cutting is fixed onto a polished wooden box.

Tobacco taking was popular in Scotland from the mid-17th century. Scots became addicted to it in all its forms, whether smoking, chewing or snuffing.
