This carved bone snuff spoon dates from the early 19th century. It takes the form of a kilted Highlander to emphasise the Scots' fondness for snuff, or the 'sneeshin', as it was known.

Taking snuff could have an elaborate set of rituals. Instruments included a hammer to tap the snuff mull, a brush to remove any excess, a rake to even out the snuff and a spoon to take it.
