Circular wooden snuff box

This wooden snuff box, decorated with a scene from Robert Burns's poetry, dates from the early 19th century.

The lid has a scene from one of Burns's poems with the text underneath 'It is the moon, I ken her horn'.

Tobacco taking was popular in Scotland from the mid 17th century. Scots became addicted to it in all its forms, whether smoking, chewing or snuffing. Snuff was known as the 'sneeshin' and a snuff box was a 'sneeshin-mill'.
