Pipe-bowl, mid 17th century
Add to album

This clay pipe-bowl was made by William Banks, the first Scottish-based manufacturer of clay pipes, who was based in the Canongate in Edinburgh. It dates from the mid 17th century.

On the underside of the pipe a castle has been stamped. The heel has 'W.B.' (for 'William Banks') inscribed on each side.

William Banks was established in the Canongate by 1622. He, his sons, and a few other makers in Canongate and Leith supplied the needs of smokers in the Edinburgh area and beyond until the early 18th century.
