Add to album

This unmarked, clay pipe-bowl was imported from the Low Countries.

One of nine pipe-heads of clay, one from Watson's Hospital

Tobacco reached Scotland from America in the early 17th century. The habit of smoking soon caught on. Tobacco was smoked in clay pipes, which were cheap and disposable. At first, barrel loads of clay pipes were shipped in from the Low Countries.
