Sundial from Wrychtis House, Edinburgh
Add to album

This 17th-century lectern sundial from Woodhouselee in Midlothian was formerly at Wrychtis House in Edinburgh.

The sundial has a twisted ornamental shaft.

Sundials, showing the time both at home and around the world, were very popular in the planned gardens of castles and mansion houses in 17th-century Scotland. They reflected the growing interest in science and the natural world.
