Gold pendant associated with Charles I
Add to album

This gold reliquary pendant commemorates Charles I. It dates from the mid 17th century.

The pointed oval pendant is set with nine table-cut diamonds. This central diamond covers the initials 'CR' (for 'Carolus Rex') crowned. The whole is ornamented with gold wire and is set on a pad of cloth and a lock of hair - perhaps relics of the king.

After the execution of Charles I, many pieces of jewellery were produced to commemorate the 'Martyr King' and to foster allegiance to the Stewart cause.
