Locket (closed), associated with Charles I
Add to album

This silver locket (pictured here closed) commemorates Charles I. It dates from around 1650.

The pointed egg-shaped locket is surmounted by an urn and a suspension loop. The front is engraved with a heart penetrated by two arrows. Under the hinged lid the letters 'CR' (for 'Carolus Rex') have been inscribed.

Many pieces of jewellery commemorate the later Stewart monarchs, particularly after the execution of Charles I in 1649. The pieces were worn by supporters of the Scottish dynasty and handed down through their families into the 18th century.
