This silver heart brooch was made in Nairn in Highland by Daniel Ferguson around 1860. Ferguson is the only recorded silversmith from Nairn, where he worked between 1852 and 1860. He may also have worked in Inverness.

Crowned heart brooch of silver, marked "NAIRN" and "D F", possibly for Daniel Ferguson of Inverness, c. 1860

Heart brooches were popular in Scotland from at least the 17th century. In the late 19th century they became known as 'Luckenbooth' brooches, a name probably taken from the shops round St Giles Church in Edinburgh, where they may have been sold.
