Brooch (front), commemorating Disruption, 1843

This is the front of a silver brooch commemorating the Disruption of 1843. It bears the Church of Scotland motto and the names of leading Presbyterian figures.

The outer edge of the brooch is decorated with thistles alternating with banners giving the important dates in the history of the Church of Scotland. The gravestones in the centre of the brooch include one for John Knox.

The greatest in a succession of splits to affect the Church of Scotland came on 18 May 1843, when around 470 ministers walked out of the General Assembly over the question of who should appoint ministers and the respective rights of Church and State.
