Brooch

This silver brooch, set with agates, citrines, bloodstone and jasper, dates from the mid 19th century. The annular design of the brooch was inspired by much earlier brooches, such as the Hunterston Brooch.

Annular brooch of silver, mid 19th version of the Hunterston brooch, set with citrines, agate, bloodstone and jasper

The Hunterston brooch, dating from 700 AD originated from the West of Scotland or Ireland. It is of a very high standard and would have probably been worn only by powerful nobles or clerics. It was found in 1830 on the Hunterston Estate in Ayrshire.
