This silver-gilt Highland brooch was found during excavations in the pit prison of Kindrochit Castle at Braemar in Aberdeenshire. It dates from the late 15th century.

The brooch has a scalloped edge and six kidney shaped bezels, each set with a flat plate. It is engraved with foliaceous designs and an inscription in Gothic ribbon letters, which states in blundered French : 'I am in place of a friend'.
