Chimney sweep's badge, used in Leith

This chimney sweep's badge was issued to George Sutherland in Leith in 1830. It is made of brass. Chimney sweeping was one of a number of trades in which burghs attempted to impose order by licensing.

The oval badge is inscribed 'Licensed by the Magistrates of Leith No.3. 1830, George Sutherland Chimney Sweep'.
