Knee breeches, worn by Very Reverend John White, Moderator of General Assembly

These knee breeches are part of the suit and robes worn by the Very Reverend John White, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1929 - the year when the majority of the Free Church reunited with the Church of Scotland

The breeches have buttons at the waist for attaching braces. Above the buckles at the knees are three decorative buttons.

Every year the General Assembly was chaired by a different Moderator, a minister chosen by committee. At the Assembly, decisions were taken on the policies, beliefs and life of the church.
