Serf's collar
Add to album

This brass serf's collar was found in the River Forth at Logie in Stirling. It dates from the early 18th century.

The collar is inscribed, 'Alexr. Steuart found guilty of death for theft at Perth the 5th of December 1701, & gifted by the Justiciars as a perpetual servant to Sir Jo. Areskin of Alva'.

Until 1799 coal cutters and haulers in Scotland were often serfs, tied to working in the mines of a particular landowner. Collars were not generally worn by serfs.
