This iron door knocker is from the door of a house in Blackfriar's Wynd in Edinburgh. The knocker dates from the 17th or 18th century.

In the Edinburgh town house of the 17th century, the wealthy merchants and burgesses were able to afford doors with locks and door knockers. Visitors were expected to knock to gain entry.
