Wrought iron door plate

This wrought iron door plate with keyhole and sneck dates from the 17th century.

Keyhole and door sneck plate of wrought iron

With life and work and neighbours in close proximity, privacy was a luxury in the Edinburgh town house of the 16th and 17th century. Merchants and burgesses could afford houses with locks and keys and visitors were expected to knock to gain entry.
