Cresset

Cressets were used to burn oil or pitch for illumination. This example is made of red sandstone and was found at Spottiswoode in Berwickshire. It dates from the 13th century.

The cresset has four depressions around a smaller central depression. There are further depressions on two sides which serve as handles.
