Candlestick

This early 16th century bronze candlestick from St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall in Orkney was made in the Low Countries.

The candlestick has a baluster stem and an octagonal base.

Both domestic and decorative metalwork were imported from the Low Countries. Although Scottish craftsmen supplied objects in bronze for the home market, it seems they were unable to meet the demand for high quality items like this candlestick.
