This notecase has on the front a view of Loch Leven Castle in Kinross-shire. The notecase dates from the 19th century and was supposedly made from wood from 'Queen Mary's Thorn' in the castle.

The oblong notecase has polished wooden covers. It is inscribed 'Lochleven Castle' and 'Queen Mary's Thorn From Lochleven Castle'.

19th-century wooden souvenirs, which were produced in vast quantities, often featured images of local views. They are a permanent record of the holiday journeys made in Scotland, and of the images which, for the holidaymakers, represented Scotland.
