Measure

This pewter measure for an Imperial quarter-gill dates from the first half of the 19th century. It is a Glasgow-type of measure, pear-shaped, with a domed lid. It is marked on the outside of the lid with a crown and 'Imperial 1/4 gill.' There is no maker's mark.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
