This pewter measure for an Imperial half gill was made in the mid 19th century by J. Moyes, a pewterer based in Edinburgh's West Bow. Moyes was operational until the late 19th century and was the last pewterer to practise his trade in Edinburgh.

The pear-shape measure has a domed lid and is inscribed with '1/2 GILL' and the excise marks for Edinburgh.

Pewter was commonly used for measures and drinking vessels as it was both fairly cheap and strong enough to stand up to to the rigours of tavern life.
