Add to album

Epergnes were for displaying fruit, sweetmeats, nuts etc in the centre of a formal dinner table setting. This silver example was made in Edinburgh in 1806-7 by Patrick Cunningham & Sons. Scottish epergnes are extremely rare.

The epergne consists of ten separate parts - a ring frame set on four legs, a central oval-shaped bowl, four smaller circular bowls and four 'S' shaped branches. The central bowl is engraved with the arms, crest and motto of Gordon of Cairnfield.
