Bowling trophy & winners' medals, of Edinburgh Society of Bowlers

This bowling trophy was presented to the Edinburgh Society of Bowlers in May 1771 by William Tod, an Edinburgh merchant and one of the Society members. The 12 suspended medals are inscribed with the names of winners from 1772-1787.

A silver jack is suspended on the left side of the wooden stand. The 12 silver medals are suspended from hooks placed around the top of the stand.

The distinctive elements of bowling appeared in England in the 16th century: the jack - a target which could be moved during the play - and the biased bowl. In the 18th century the game was particularly popular in Edinburgh.
