Made for Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun

Silver casket

This silver casket, dated 1706-7, was made by Edinburgh silversmith, Thomas Ker, for Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun (1681-1742). The casket forms part of a silver toilet set which includes a ewer and a basin.

The casket has a stepped base moulding and four bun feet. The casket lid is engraved with the monogram 'HLH' surmounted by an earl's coronet and surrounded by two branches of foliage.

The earl was MP for Linlithgow in the pre-Union parliament. He actively supported the Union and was rewarded with a place on the Scottish Privy Council and a seat in the House of Lords as one of the 16 Scottish representative peers.
