Targe, owned by Marquis of Breadalbane

A targe was a circular Highland battle shield made of wood and covered with leather. This silver gilt presentation targe was presented to John Campbell, the 2nd Marquis of Breadalbane, by the newly enfranchised Liberal electors of Perthshire.

In 1832 new laws were passed which greatly increased the number of people throughout Britain who were eligible to vote. John Campbell won the seat of Perthshire for the Liberal party in the first post-reform election.
