Made for Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun

Silver basin
Add to album

This silver basin, dated 1706-7, was made by Edinburgh silversmith, Thomas Ker, for Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun (1681-1742). The basin forms part of a silver toilet set which includes a ewer and a casket.

The basin is of a simple, almost hemi-spherical form, set on a circular stepped foot. The basin front is engraved with the monogram 'HLH' surmounted by an earl's coronet and surrounded by two branches of foliage.

The basin, ewer and casket were probably made as extra or replacement pieces for a much larger toilet service made for the Earl by the London goldsmith Anthony Nelme in 1691-2.
