Thistle cup made in Glasgow, 1709-10
Add to album

This silver thistle cup was made by the Glasgow goldsmith John Luke. It is dated 1709-10. Thistle cups were so-called because of their shape and were unique to Scotland.

The initials 'I/SG' are engraved opposite the cup handle and may be of a husband and wife.

John Luke was a member of a remarkable family of Glasgow goldsmiths, who were also involved in a wide variety of other businesses, such as soapworks and an iron foundry.
