Inkstand with inkwells
Add to album

This silver inkstand with two pear-shaped inkwells was made in 1843-4 by Marshall & Sons of Edinburgh.

The stand is on four cast, double-scroll feet and is decorated all over with chasing, embossing and engraving. The glass inkwells have silver-mounted necks and lids.

Basic writing materials were pen, ink and paper, but quill cutters, sand dredges, and writing sets were all part of the letter-writer's equipment. Writing sets could be made in the most fashionable styles for men and for women.
