Silver jug for hot water, made in Glasgow, 1897-98
Add to album

This silver hot water jug was made in 1897-8 by W.W. Logan, a silversmith in Glasgow. It was made to complete a four-piece tea set decorated with the signs of the Zodiac. The other three pieces were made in 1873-4 by another Glasgow silversmith, J. Reid.

The base of the jug is round with sides which curve outwards then rise straight to the shoulder and rim. The body is divided into 12 rectangular panels, each with a different pattern of the Zodiac.

Domestic silverware was a mark of taste and indicated status. In the 19th century, customers who visited the silver department of any large department store or who patronized fashionable silversmiths found an increasing range of decorative styles.
