Silver sugar basin made in Glasgow, 1873-74
Add to album

This barrel-shaped silver sugar basin was made in 1873-4 by J. Reid, a silversmith in Glasgow. It is part of a four-piece tea set decorated with the signs of the Zodiac.

The sugar basin is gilded inside and the body is divided into 12 rectangular panels, each with a different pattern of the Zodiac.

Domestic silverware was a mark of taste and indicated status. In the 19th century, customers who visited the silver department of any large department store or who patronized fashionable silversmiths found an increasing range of decorative styles.
