Silver teapot made in Glasgow, 1873-74
Add to album

This silver teapot was made in 1873-4 by J. Reid, a silversmith in Glasgow. It is part of a four-piece tea set decorated with the signs of the Zodiac.

The teapot has straight sides which curve in to a circular base. The body is divided into 12 rectangular panels, each with a different pattern of the Zodiac.

The size of teapots varied with the date. Tea was initially very expensive and this was reflected in the relatively small size of 18th century pots. As tea became cheaper in the 19th century, teapots became larger.
