Silver chocolate pot, made in Edinburgh
Add to album

This silver chocolate pot, made in Edinburgh by Patrick Murray, was the 1721 prize for winning the annual horse race at Selkirk in the Borders.

The reverse of the pear-shaped pot is engraved with a representation of the seal of the burgh of Selkirk.

Initiated in 1715, an annual race, it was felt, would bring wealthy gentlemen to Selkirk, and increase the town's prosperity. A silver prize to the value of 10 pounds sterling was provided. The race was run on the last Tuesday of April at the Gala Rig.
