Silver cup made in Banff

This silver cup was made around 1785 by William Byres in Banff in Abderdeenshire.

The two-handled cup has a plain trumpet stem and a high domed lid with an acorn finial. The cup is plain apart from the engraving on the side, 'The gift of Miss Abernethie to her niece Mrs Duff'.

Like other Banff goldsmiths, Byres trained in Aberdeen, apprenticed to James Wildgoose, before being admitted to the Banff Hammermen in 1778. This cup is an exceptionally large piece for a provincial maker whose main work was cutlery and small items.
