Silver wax jack with a detachable silver snuffer

This silver wax jack with detachable silver snuffer was made by the Edinburgh silversmiths Dick & Macpherson, in 1808-9.

Silver wax jack on a shallow oval base with a gadrooned border, by Dick and Macpherson, Edinburgh, 1808 - 1809

Wax jacks were sometimes called taper stands and held a reel of wax taper, treated with turpentine, which burned with a clean light and did not crack when bent.
