Silver salver known as the Strathmore Salver
Add to album

This silver salver, known as the 'Strathmore Salver', dates from between 1667 and 1669. Made by Edinburgh silversmith, Alexander Scott it was re-engraved with the arms of the Earl of Strathmore in 1684 by James Cockburn, also of Edinburgh.

The wide circular rim is chased and embossed with plain ovals alternating with large acanthus leaves. The centre is engraved with the arms of Patrick Lyon, first Earl of Strathmore.

After the Restoration of Charles II, the Earl set about rebuilding his family's fortunes. Among his purchases were second-hand dishes from Cockburn. The existing arms were removed from the dishes and this salver is probably one of these pieces.
