Silver commemorative casket and ivory hammer

This silver casket and carved ivory hammer were presented to the Countess of Dundonald by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering, on the occasion of the launch of HMS Cochrane on 20 May 1905.

The casket, which sits on four winged dolphin feet, has a platform hinged lid with the Royal Arms on top.

Fairfield Shipping and Engineering Company Limited was based at Govan on the River Clyde. In the 19th century the Clyde became the world's leading shipbuilding region with yards at Greenock, Port Glasgow, Dumbarton and Govan.
