Silver teapot and stand

This silver teapot and stand was made by Edinburgh silversmith William Robertson, in 1791-2.

The teapot and stand are of a hexagonal design. The straight-sided teapot is engraved on its centre panels with arms depicting a wolf's head on one panel and three bulls' heads on the other.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, owning a silver teapot indicated status, wealth and taste. Tea was initially very expensive and in the 18th century teapots were small. In the 19th century tea became cheaper, more was drunk and teapots became larger.
