Dirk, silver-mounted, second half of the 19th century
Add to album

This silver-mounted dirk, pictured here with its fork and knife, dates from the second half of the 19th century. Such dirks, although originally clansmens' weapons, became part of military and civilian Highland dress.

The hilt is cut with interlacing strapwork and studded with nails.

The Highland dirk was an all-purpose implement which evolved from the medieval dagger. Dirks could be tools, utensils for eating, and weapons. They were made by local craftsmen and carried by most men.
