Breastplate, owned by the Lairds of Grant, later Earls of Seafield

This iron breastplate is one of a number of items from an almost unique survival, the family armoury of the Lairds of Grant, later Earls of Seafield, who were based in Speyside. It dates from the mid 17th century.

The left side of the breastplate bears the indentation of a bullet - made by the manufacturer to demonstrate the quality of the breastplate.

The Seafield armoury also includes a field gun, swords, a targe, pistols and a fine collection of long guns.
