Sword (Detail), owned by Lairds of Grant
Add to album

This detail shows the hilt and part of the blade of a cavalry sword which dates from around 1640. The sword is part of a collection of weapons from the family armoury of the Lairds of Grant, later Earls of Seafield, who were based in Speyside.

The hilt is known as a 'mortuary' hilt. The term mortuary was used by later collectors because of an assumed, but probably misleading, link with Charles I who was executed in 1649.

The weapon collection of the Lairds of Grant, later Earls of Seafield, includes pistols, field guns, swords, targes, armour and a fine collection of long guns.
