Pistols, owned by the Lairds of Grant
Add to album

This pair of all steel belt pistols were possibly made by William Smith of Duthel in Inverness-shire. They are part of a collection of weapons from the family armoury of the Lairds of Grant, later Earls of Seafield, who were based in Speyside.

Each pistol has a heart-shaped butt and a snaphance lock mechanism which uses a flint to spark the gunpowder. The pistols are inscribed with the maker's initials 'WS'.

The Seafield armoury includes pistols, a field gun, swords, a targe, a breastplate and a fine collection of long guns.
