This powder horn is made from a large cow horn. It dates from the 17th century and belonged to James Graham, Marquis of Montrose.

The horn has a silver end piece with the arms of the Marquis.

The Marquis of Montrose was one of the early leaders of the Covenanters. He opposed Charles I's religious policies, but then transferred his loyalty to the Stewart dynasty.
