Powder horn, engraved with map of north-east America
Add to album

This powder horn is engraved with a map of north-east America, showing the forts involved in the struggle for territory between Britain and France from 1689-1763, known as the French and Indian Wars.

The map also shows the rivers, lakes and pictorial features of north-east America as it was around the mid 18th century.

Powder horns were fashioned from cow's horns softened in boiling oil and flattened before being carved. They were plugged at the wider end, and the stopper at the narrow end was often used to measure the correct quantity of gunpowder.
