Iron pistol made around 1750
Add to album

This iron pistol was made by Alexander Campbell of Doune in Stirlingshire about 1750.

The pistol has a scroll butt and a Doune lock mechanism which uses a flint to spark the gunpowder.

A demand from Highlanders for pistols was met in the 17th and early 18th centuries by the town of Doune. After the Jacobite Rising of 1745, the market for Doune pistols declined and Doune-trained gunsmiths dispersed to other towns.
